Recent History

    In 1985 HTB, with the encouragement and involvement of the Bishop of Kensington, sent curate John Irvine with 100 members of the congregation to St Barnabas Church Addison Road, Kensington – a church on the verge of being made redundant.

    Two years later, the Bishop of Southwark invited Paul Perkin and a team of 50 to St Mark’s Battersea Rise.

    Since then, St Barnabas and St Mark’s have planted churches of their own in Acton, Balham and Hammersmith.

    In 1991, Nicky Lee took 200 members to start St Paul’s Onslow Square.

    In 1994, Tom Gillum led HTB’s fourth plant to St Stephen’s Westbourne Park Road, Bayswater.

    In 1997, St Paul’s Onslow Square divided, with a group going to Christ Church Fulham and others reuniting with HTB.

    In 2000, more than 200 HTB Members wend with Simon Downham to St Paul’s Hammersmith to start a new venture there.

    In 2002, John Valentine led a new church plant with 100 members of Holy Trinity to St George the Martyr, Queen Square, Bloomsbury.

    In 2003, HTB Vicar Sandy Millar was installed into the additional role of Priest-in-Charge of the north London parish of St Mark’s Tollington Park.

    In 2005, Sandy Millar retired after twenty years as Vicar and led a church plant to Tollington Park.

    In January 2005, curate Ric Thorpe led a plant with 100 HTB members to St Paul’s Shadwell, assisted by fellow curate Jez Barnes.

    In September 2005, Nicky Gumbel became Vicar of Holy Trinity Brompton.

    In 2006, curate Andy Keighley led a team of around 100 to plant a church at Holy Trinity Swiss Cottage in north London.

    In 2007, Sunday Services restarted at St Paul’s, with the launch of the 9am and 6pm services.

    In 2008, the 11am service was launched at St Paul’s.

    In September 2009, a new 4pm service was launched at St Paul’s.

    In October 2009, Archie and Sam Coates led an HTB team to plant a new congregation at St Peter’s Brighton.

    In June 2010, Nicky Gumbel was made Priest-in-Charge of St Augustine’s Queens Gate. Paul Cowley was made Priest Pastor and, along with David Walker, now runs the 11am Sung Eucharist.

    In September 2010, a new 4.30pm service was launched at St Augustine’s.
