Most Christians acknowledge that prayer is vital to their spiritual health and growth. Yet many Christians struggle to maintain regular habits of prayer. How does prayer work? How should we pray? Can we learn lessons from the spiritual masters of the past in how, when and why to communicate with God?
Recognising that prayer was the heartbeat of Christ's ministry, His first disciples asked: 'Lord, teach us to pray'. This is a day for those who are still asking that question, designed to inform and ignite your prayer life by exploring the ancient riches of Christian prayer. Included in the day will be insights into prayer from some past masters, including C.S. Lewis (by Simon Barrington-Ward who knew him personally) and Martin Luther (by Graham Tomlin). This 'School of Prayer' forms part of St Paul's Theological Centre's 'School of Theology', but for once, they are opening out the invitation to others as this is such a vital area for everyone.
Speakers:
SIMON BARRINGTON-WARD is a former Bishop of Coventry, Lecturer in Ibadan University in Nigeria, Principal of a missionary training college and Fellow and Dean of Magdalene College Cambridge. He is the author of many books, including 'The Jesus Prayer' and 'Why, God?'
PETE GREIG is one of the founding leaders of the 24-7 Prayer network, and heads up the Prayer Department at HTB. He is the author of several books, including 'God on Mute', often cited as one of the best modern books on unanswered prayer.
GRAHAM TOMLIN is Principal of St Paul's Theological Centre and Dean of St Mellitus College. He has written several books including 'Luther and his World' and 'The Seven Deadly Sins'.
