Around 300 delegates attended the Prison Ministry Conference at HTB Brompton Road this morning.
Paul Cowley, who heads up Prisons Ministry at Alpha International, introduced Nicky Gumbel who opened the conference.
At 11am there was a two minute silence. Paul Cowley led a prayer of thanks to God for those who had given their lives in armed conflict.
Michael Spurr, head of the UK Prison Service and Chief Executive of the National Offenders Management Service (NOMS) gave the keynote address.
He said, ‘An awful lot that should happen in Prisons from Christians is about being alongside people. Because we care where people are.’
NOMS is an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice which brings together the headquarters of the Probation Service and HM Prison with the goal of protecting the public and reducing reoffending.
Michael joined the prisons service 25 years ago and has served in many roles within it. He attends HTB Brompton Road when his work brings him to London.
The conference will continue all day and will include workshops, interviews and testimonies as well as a longer talk by Paul Cowley.
