HF 2007: Relief & Evangelism - Two Christian organisation bosses give their visions

Two men who head up large Christian organisations were interviewed by Nicky Gumbel during evening sessions at Home Focus.

Mark Russell is the youngest ever chief executive of the Church Army, a body of around 500 evangelists within the Anglican communion. He is also a member of the Archbishops' Council, the executive council of the Church of England.

He spoke about his upbringing as a child and youth leader in Northern Ireland, where he arranged for young people to meet the province's political leaders. He said, 'HTB are setting an example to the rest of us about putting your money where your mouth is in relation to mission.

'I go round the country and speak in churches and I always end up feeling like a nutter - because all I want to talk about is mission and helping people meet Jesus. I came here and felt the Lord saying, "You're going to be in the company of fellow nutters this week."'

Matthew Frost, head of relief organisation Tearfund and a former member of Holy Trinity Brompton, spoke of Tearfund's dream of mobilising 100,000 local churches around the world to help combat poverty.

He told the story of a single Delhi church helping to transform a slum community in an extraordinary way. He said, 'We think that (the local church) is the key part of poverty reduction that hasn't really been tackled. The state can play a role, commerce can play a role, even celebrities... But the local church is the heart of it all.'
